The killer quadrant

Vitality, shrinkage,
and time.

Most influence frameworks treat "alive-making" and "diminishing" as opposite poles of one axis. They are not. The High Vitality / High Shrinkage cell is where most of the genuinely dangerous people in human history have lived — and where some of the best teachers, therapists, and mentors do their work. The decisive question is not whether someone destabilized you. It is what happened after.

Plot a field

Move the point.

Drag the sliders to plot a field you have been in. The diagnostic readout below names the quadrant and tells you which question to ask next. The High-V / High-S cell is decided by the time axis, not by the moment of contact.

Transformative Pressure / Intoxicating Capture

Temporal Durability plus Agency Recovery decide the split: does the aliveness become portable?

High vitality / Low shrinkage

Generative Field

Aliveness rises without agency capture.

High vitality / High shrinkage

Transformative Pressure or Intoxicating Capture

Decided by Temporal Durability and the Agency Recovery Curve.

Low vitality / Low shrinkage

Neutral / Flat

Safe but not generative.

Low vitality / High shrinkage

Deadening / Extractive

No aliveness. Less agency.

The four quadrants

What each cell actually means.

High vitality / Low shrinkage

Generative Field

You leave more alive and more yourself.

Clean gold. Aliveness increases without agency capture.

High vitality / High shrinkage

Transformative Pressure / Intoxicating Capture

The dangerous and interesting quadrant. May be fierce apprenticeship, deep therapy, or artistic transformation. May also be cult dynamics, charismatic capture, or predatory mentorship.

Temporal Durability plus Agency Recovery decide the split: does the aliveness become portable?

Low vitality / Low shrinkage

Neutral / Safe / Flat

Not harmful. Not especially generative. Sometimes necessary.

A field can be safe without being alive. Not every interaction needs to be volcanic.

Low vitality / High shrinkage

Deadening / Extractive Field

No aliveness. Still less agency.

Bureaucratic domination, shame-based control, contemptuous relationships, and dead institutions live here.

The v3.11 nuance

Developmental compression vs. captive shrinkage.

Some of the most transformative relationships produce temporary disorientation, dependency, humility, ego-collapse, or destabilization. A fierce teacher can do this. A great director can do this. A demanding analyst can do this. The question is not whether you temporarily felt smaller. It is whether the shrinkage metabolized into greater agency, or hardened into dependence.

Developmental compression

Agency Recovery Curve

  1. Initial exposure / compression
  2. Disorientation
  3. Integration
  4. Increased independent agency
  5. Portability beyond the original field

Captive shrinkage

Agency Decay Curve

  1. Initial intoxication
  2. Disorientation
  3. Dependency
  4. Self-doubt outside the field
  5. Increased orbiting around the field-generator
A generative teacher compresses you until your own engine comes online. A predator compresses you until you cannot run without them.

Diagnostic toolkit

Questions sharp enough to use.

What becomes harder around this person?
Do you feel more yourself after leaving their field?
Did the effect remain useful after distance and time?
Does your aliveness become more portable, or more dependent on continued contact?
After feeling challenged or destabilized, did you regain yourself with more range?
Can you stay loyal to the thing after the ignition is over?
